2023年8月13日長崎県美術館ホールで行われたTEDxDejima EDに通訳としてnarynglishがサポート参加をさせていただきました。
元高校教師のnaryの教員仲間からお声がかかり、今回の大役を務めさせて頂くことになりました。
教員を辞め、独立開業することを知った仲間の1人が応援の意味も込めてチャンスをくれた舞台。
突然のご指名で驚きとドキドキでしたが、この上ない経験となりました。
TEDxDejima ED 2023とは
TEDはTechnology Entertainment Designの略でアメリカ ニューヨークが本拠地のNPO団体が主催をし、様々な分野のエキスパートによるプレゼンテーションを開催しています。様々な分野で活躍する人物による講演「TED Talks」は、全世界で開催されています。Ideas Worth Spreadingという理念を掲げ、良いアイデアを世界に広めることをミッションとしています。今回、長崎県で開催されたTEDxDejima EDはED＝educationの分野で活躍している人たちのプレゼンテーションが行われました。
narynglish×アリー・ビーザー
narynglishはTEDxDejima EDにて、当日のパンフレットに掲載されたアリ・ビーザーさんのTED Talkの翻訳のお手伝いと、After Talkの通訳のお手伝いをさせていただきました。
高校の英語教師として20年近く英語指導をしてきたnaryですが、通訳に関しては経験がなく、不安のまま挑みました。
初めての通訳という挑戦に自分のリテンション不足を感じたり、通訳で断定できなかったりしたことはとても反省しています。
ですが、このような機会を提供してくださった皆様に感謝すると共に、もっと自分の英語力の向上と社会への関心や知識を高めていくという新たな夢に巡り会うことができました。
TEDxDejima ED 第一部 Conversation Peace
第一部では、オーガナイザーの金谷一朗(かなや いちろう)先生のもと、調仁美(しらべ ひとみ)さんと原田小鈴(はらだ こすず)さんのパネルディスカッション。
長崎での平和教育の意味やあり方を考えました。と同時に、会場からの質問もあり大きく会が盛り上がり、様々な意見が飛び交う中「自ら知ろうとする人にしか届かない事実/教育」を広げていくにはどうすればいいのか、という新しい疑問を抱くことができました。
TEDxDejima ED 第二部 TED×Talk
第二部では、元同僚の前川卓郎先生が「教師である意味」について、キーウ・インディペンデント記者の寺島朝海さんが「ウクライナの現状」について、そして2つの原子爆弾を落とした爆撃機に乗っていたジェイコブ・ビーザーさんを祖父にもちマルチメディア・ストーリーテラーとして活躍されているアリ・ビーザーさんが時間を超えて伝える「矛盾を伴う人間らしさと平和観」についてお話されました。

このお二人に共通することは「原子爆弾」。
アリ・ビーザーさんの祖父は、ジェイコブ・ビーザーさん。広島・長崎に原子爆弾を落とした両方の爆撃機に乗っていた唯一の人。原田小鈴さんの祖父は、山口彊(つとむ)さん。広島・長崎の両方で二重被爆を経験した人。このお二人は今、互いに友人となり、核兵器廃絶へ向けてそれぞれの立場で活動をされています。

TEDxDejima EDを終えてnaryが思うこと
今回のTEDでの翻訳・通訳のお仕事を通じて感じたことは、戦争や平和を語るのは直接戦争に関わった人や被爆者のみではないということ。私たち一人ひとりが”世界をよくするために”学び、自分の意見に自信がなくとも声をあげていくことが、豊かで平和な日常を創っていくと思います。稚拙な私の翻訳や通訳も、やってみなければ磨かれない。自分が持っている想いも声や文字に出していかなければ、自分一人の凝りかたまった「主観」でしかない。人とひととがつながり、交流することが平和を築いていく大切な要素なのだと確信しました。
何より、今回この会に携わった人たちみなさんが本当に人として素晴らしい方たちばかり。発信力はもちろん、受容力、傾聴力、お互いを認め合う最初の一歩となる相手を信頼する力をどなたも兼ね備えていらっしゃいました。こんなステキな会に携わることができ本当に感謝しています。
地球に生きる一人の人間として、自分にできることを一つずつ積み重ねていきたいと改めて感じました。
そして、「英語」という道具を使いこなすことができれば、より豊かでより平和な世界実現を促進することができる、とも改めて感じました。自分自身も英語だけでなく様々なことにアンテナを張り、学び続けていきたいです。

English Translation of the above Article
At TEDxDejima ED, I assisted in the translation of Ali Beezer’s TED Talk, which was included in the day’s brochure, and in the interpretation of the After Talk. I regret that I was not experienced and confident enough in interpreting, and I felt that I was not retentive enough and could not be definitive in my interpretation… but I am very grateful to everyone who provided me with this opportunity. I strongly felt again that I would like to increase both my English skills and my interest in and knowledge of society more.
The first part of the event was a panel discussion between Ms. Hitomi Shirabe and Ms. Kosuzu Harada, led by the organizer, Dr. Ichiro Kanaya from Nagasaki University. From the discussion, I considered the meaning and ideal of peace education in Nagasaki. At the same time, the meeting was greatly enlivened by questions from the audience. As various opinions were exchanged, I could hold a new question about how we can expand facts/education that is now only reached to those who try to know for themselves can reach.
In the second part, former colleague Mr.Takuro Maekawa talked about “What it means to be a teacher,” Keough Independent reporter Asami Terashima talked about “The current situation in Ukraine.” Then Ali Beiser, a multimedia storyteller whose grandfather was Jacob Beiser, the bomber who dropped the two atomic bombs I mentioned in my last post, spoke about “humanity with contradictions and a sense of peace” that transcends time. I would like everyone to watch TEDxDejimaED when it is released.
What I felt at this meeting was that it is not only those who were directly involved in the war and bomb survivors who talk about war and peace, but that each of us must learn to “make the world a better place” and speak up even if we are not confident in our own opinions, so that we can create a rich and peaceful everyday life. Even my poor translation and interpretation skills will not be polished unless I try. Unless I express my thoughts and feelings out loud and in writing, they will remain only my own elaborate and subjective opinions. I am convinced that connecting and interacting with people is an important element in building peace.
Above all, all the people involved in this meeting were truly wonderful as human beings. They not only had the ability to communicate, but also the ability to accept, listen to, and trust each other, which is the first step toward mutual understanding. I am truly grateful to have been involved in such a wonderful meeting.
As a human being living on the earth, I felt once again that I would like to do what I can do one by one, step by step.
I also felt once again that if we can master the tool called “English,” we can promote the realization of a more prosperous and peaceful world. I would like to continue learning not only English, but also to keep my antenna up for other things, like what happens around the world. Thank you for reading.
